Posted on January 26, 2007

The Fairfax Host Lions Club is a service organization of more than 60 men and women. The local club is affiliated with Lions Clubs International, the largest service club in the world. Our motto is “We Serve”. We have a 55 year history of service to Fairfax, contributing our time and more than $1.5M to help those less fortunate than ourselves and having fun.

The club provides service to the community focused in five major categories:

  • Sight and hearing loss prevention and assistance, including provision of glasses and hearing aids to the needy, sponsorship of the Virginia Lions Eye Institute, manning the Lions Sight and Hearing Van at local events
  • Community services, including providing food baskets to the needy during the holidays, participating in rebuilding America, running bingo game in local nursing homes, and maintaining the cleanliness of a portion of Pickett Rd in Fairfax
  • Youth programs, including sponsorship of an International Peace Poster Contest, a music scholarship program, Leo clubs in local schools, and sponsorship of a Fairfax Little League team
  • Diabetes and health services, including participation in the Walk for Diabetes
  • International programs, including support for victims of Hurricanes, and sponsorship of a Lions Club International Foundation Grant to develop medical facilities in Uganda

Fundraising to support programs our programs include selling citrus fruit, managing a car donation program, and various other activities.

The club ensures members enjoy their membership through social programs aimed at making service fun and interesting. All meetings include programs and speakers as well as 50-50 drawings and a “Tail Twister” to liven up the crowd. We have several special events each year including:

  • Charter Night – the clubs birthday party
  • Holiday Party – celebrating the Christmas and Hanukah seasons
  • Family picnic – for the whole family and friends

The club membership meets at the American Legion Post 177, at 3939 Oak Street, Fairfax, VA, 22030. Meetings are on the first and third Tuesday of the month and include a social, dinner, and a speaker. The social begins at 6:30PM and we adjourn by 8:30. A board of directors administers club activities and meets monthly on the fourth Tuesday of the month.
