Civil War Re-enactor Speaks to Lions

Posted on May 7, 2025

The FX Lions were honored to have a civil war re-enactor speak at our May 6 dinner meeting. Robert Calhelha wore a Union Army soldier’s field uniform and told us about several of the rifles soldiers used in the war. Fairfax Lions meeting are always entertaining; plan to visit one!

Robert wore on his uniform the badge representing VI Corps (in the shape of a “Greek Cross”). The red color signifies the 1st Division of VI Corps. After taking command of the Union’s Army of the Potomac, Major General Joseph Hooker introduced the use of corps badges as a means of readily identifying a soldier or body of men in the confusion of battle.
One of several civil war replica rifles Robert talked about. Note canteen, cup and bayonet worn with uniform.
