Senior Olympics on Fairfax Lions Bocce Ball Court

Posted on September 29, 2017Comments are off

A few years ago, Fairfax Lions Club volunteers built a Bocce Ball court at the Fairfax City’s Green Acres Senior Center. Lion Bill Trent led that effort. The Northern Virginia Senior Olympics bocce competition on Sep 14, 2017, was held on that very court. Lions Award Major Catastrophe Grant in Puerto Rico

Posted on September 27, 2017Comments are off

Recent disasters struck several places with devastating results – among them hurricanes in the US and Caribbean islands.  Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF, which all Lions Clubs contribute to) has awarded a $100,000 grant to support relief and reconstruction in Puerto Rico in the wake of hurricane destruction. Emergency and major catastrophe grants allow Lions on scene to provide much-needed supplies.

LCIF makes emergency grants to local Lions; Lions in the disaster area work with local government officials and other agencies to ensure the right supplies getto areas most in need, without duplication of effort.

Lions Recycle Record Number of Donated Eyeglasses

Fairfax Lions collect eyeglasses donated by area residents, and provide them to people in need. There are collection boxes at numerous locations; see list at: https://fairfaxlions.org/?s=eyeglass+recycling

September, 2017, was a bountiful month; we collected 921 pairs of eyeglasses (and 4 hearing aids – which we also recycle for persons in need). We thank everyone their donations!

Lions clean, inspect, categorize, and package the donated glasses at the LIONS EYEGLASS RECYCLING CENTER OF NORTHERN VIRGINIA in Arlington, VA http://www.valions.org/egrc/index.html. This volunteer service is especially rewarding when you consider the number of people who can see better after receiving a pair of recycled eyeglasses.  WE SERVE!

Lions Support Little League

Last year, Fairfax Lions Club allocated roughly 47% of its charity budget to youth programs. The programs included: Braille books for children, support for Sprout therapeutic riding, art and music contests, rennovation of the VA Lions Youth Camp, and support to two Little League teams.  We have supported local little league teams for years.  Here is a 1961 Fairfax City team called the “Lions.”

Lions Call Bingo at Fairfax Nursing Center

Posted on September 10, 2017Comments are off

Each month (usually on the 3rd Wednesday) the Fairfax Lions call bingo for residents of the Fairfax Nursing Center.  It is a relatively small effort involving a handful of Lions, but this Bingo night is something the residents look forward to and enjoy.  Winners (and we try to assure everyone wins) receive coupons they can exchange in the Center’s store; all participants receive a small gift from the Lions club.

33 Good Units! Successful Red Cross Blood Drive: Sep 5, 2017

Posted on August 24, 2017Comments are off

The Fairfax Lions Club blood drive for the American Red Cross was a great success: 33 “good units” were donated. Since the Lions began these blood drives several years ago, 3297 units of blood have been donated!

This drive was timely, given Hurricane Harvey. Red Cross blood serves our community and world-wide needs, but the blood supply was disrupted severely by Hurricane Harvey. Not only did blood needs increase, but normal blood donation in the 4th largest city in the US simply stopped – as facilities and people were preoccupied. So this Lions blood drive was meaningful.

Mark your calendars, the next Lions Blood Drive is scheduled for Tuesday May 1, 2018.; same location: Providence Presbyterian Church.

The Lions thank all donors (which included many Lions)!
