Providing Warmth and Care to the Homeless

Posted on December 7, 2018Comments are off

Winter in Northern Virginia is always a challenging time of the year, especially for those who are experiencing chronic homelessness. The Lamb Center, in Fairfax City, provides important services to drop-in guests needing food, a hot shower, clean clothes and much, much more. Warm thermal underwear is one of the most-needed clothing items at the Lamb Center.

Recognizing this need for thermal underwear, the Fairfax Lions Club went into action. A total of 21 sets (tops and bottoms) for both men and women were purchased and delivered to the Lamb Center by Lions on November 20th. As freezing temperatures were in the immediate forecast, the Lamb Center Director of Operations, accepted the thermals and began distributing them that very same day.

Vision Screenings

Main Street Child Development Center in the City of Fairfax, on Oct 30: Main Street is a pre-school that reaches out to children in poor families and children with disabilities.  We checked vision of 73 children (age 3-6) and 4 teachers, and referred 10 children (13.7% of total children) for professional eye care.  It required only about 9 hours of volunteer time to render this service.

The Lamb Center on three days: Oct 31, Nov 1, and Nov 2:   The Center is a drop-in day center that works to assist in practical ways to transform the lives of the homeless, the very poor, those with mental and physical disabilities, and those with substance abuses.  A total of 28 guests were screened over the three days, and 15 were referred for professional eye examinations.

Speaker Talks About 7th Fleet Incidents at Sea

Posted on October 17, 2018Comments are off

Our dinner meetings (1st & 3rd Tuesdays, monthly), feature a speaker of general interest.  On October 16th, a US Navy Captain (retired) told us about incidents in the US 7th Fleet.  The most serious caused tragic loss of life, injury and major ship damage; they were due to degraded basic seamanship – that is, the safe maneuvering of a vessel at sea.

Anyone is invited to attend a dinner meeting.  You will meet the volunteers who are members of the Lions Club, learn about community service programs we do, and enjoy a nice meal.  Interested?  RSVP to fairfaxlions@cox.net

On Oct 16th, we also learned about a new “font” designed to boost memory.
