Lion Jeff Root Commended for Leading Peace Poster Competition

Posted on February 21, 2018Comments are off

Lion Jeff Root has run the annual Peace Poster competition in Fairfax Lions Club for many years.  Every year students put their creative talents to work, representing in an art poster their vision of world peace.  Their posters compete for cash prizes (which can be used to further their interest in art) at Lions Club, local district, state and international levels. This year the Lions local District Governor, Dr. Sally Kenavan, asked Jeff Root to lead the district competition – which of course he did.  And, as usual, Lion Jeff ran an exemplary competition.

On February 20, 2018, Dr. Sally Kenavan presented a certificate of appreciation to Lion Jeff Root for his service to our community and leadership of a project aimed at encouraging development in young people.

Vision Screening at Chocolate Lover’s Festival

On February 3rd, Fairfax Lions conducted a free vision screening for anyone that walked into the Fairfax Fire Station on University Drive during the City’s Chocolate Lover’s Festival.  In that same location, the Fairfax Kiwanis Club held their Annual Pancake Breakfast. So you could have breakfast, and check your vision!

Happy Families After Having Vision Checked

This was a very rewarding service event – we screened 127 people, including many teenagers and families.  Of that total, we referred 15 people for professional eye care, and 11 of those were young persons.

At the Fairfax Lions Club dinner meeting on January 16, the guest speaker was Javier Alarcon-Ramos from Fairfax County’s Health Department. Javier was introduced by his boss – Ms. Shauna Severo, County Assistant Director for Patient Care Services.

Javier Alarcon-Ramos, Fairfax County Health Department

Shauna and Javier told us about providing eye exams and eyeglasses for the needy under a partnership between the County Government, INOVA Lions Eye Clinic, local eyeglass companies, and several local Lions Clubs. The partnership has been in work for a year now with some good results. Fairfax Lions Club has a robust eyeglass program for the needy, and utilizes County resources to assure qualified persons participate.  Persons considering this resource should apply thru the County Health Department.
