For the Lions year 2013-2014, Fairfax Lions Club, working with the local Lions Eye Clinic, provided 31 of our neighbors in Fairfax with exams and much needed eyeglasses to help them go about their lives. Fairfax Lions thank all those who have supported our fund raising activities – you have enabled us to make this happen.

Native to Central & South America, and cultivated since 8,000 B.C, the avocado is also grown in FL and CA.
The avocado has inflammatory properties…its ability to prevent unwanted inflammation is absolutely unquestionable in the world of health research…and is particularly well-documented with problems involving arthritis.
The avocado is very high in antioxidants… which increase the benefit you receive from contents of a salad, like spinach/carrots/lettuce. The avocado increases your body’s absorption of the good lycopene and beta-carotene from the other contents.
The avocado has potential anti-cancer properties, and contains materials also found in olives and olive oil which help lower the risk of heart disease.
The greatest concentration of good oils, etc, is in dark green flesh that lies just beneath the skin….so peel the avocado carefully!
A ripe, ready-to-eat avocado is slightly soft but should have no dark sunken spots. Ripen less mature, firm fruit at home (it will be less likely to have bruises) – in a paper bag or a table top basket at room temperature. As it ripens, skin turns darker, refrigerate. Avocados should not be refrigerated until they are ripe.

Jim Graham, of the non-profit Every1CanWork, spoke to Fairfax Lons at their dinner meeting on April 1, 2014. Every1CanWork has opened a Fairfax store called Cameron’s Chocolates. It exists for the purpose of employing disabled persons who work in parallel with non-disabled. Cameron’s Chocolates provides meaningful work opportunities for persons who otherwise might not find employment anywhere. Jim told the Lions about a 24 year-old woman who received the first paycheck in her life working at Cameron’s Chocolates. The employees are given business cards which boost their self-pride and motivation.
This initiative has been reported on by ABC-7 TV news; see http://bcove.me/dxkk8iey (you must watch a commercial first) Cameron’ Chocolates is located near Fairfax Circle.
More information is available at http://every1canwork.com/ Join us there for coffee, pastry or chocolate!
