Vision & Hearing Screening

Posted on November 8, 2025Comments are off

On Nov 6, three Fairfax Lions joined with 3 parent volunteers to screen vision & hearing of 3rd & 7th graders at St Timothy’s Catholic School (in Chantilly).  We identified several youngsters for referral to a professional. It is always rewarding to help youngsters identify limitations so appropriate remedies can be applied.

Results for students screened on Nov 6: Number tested for hearing, 118; Number tested for Vision, 104; Number Referred: Hearing, 15; Vision, 9

The school nurse sent this note: “A huge thank-you for helping us to accomplish our annual vision and hearing screening today! We could not have done it without your help and expertise.  We hope you will be able to help us next year too!”

Pill Bottles: Where They are Needed

FX Lion Bonnie Short told Lions, at the Nov 4 dinner meeting, of her family’s involvement with “Matthew 25 Ministries.”  Lion Bonnie  emphasized her personal interest in collecting used prescription (or over-the-counter) plastic pill bottles, all sizes.   The re-used bottles go world wide to distribute medicine to those who need it. She asked that we remove labels (leave no  residue), wash them in hot soapy water and dry, and replace lids.

Vision & Hearing Screening

Fairfax Lions appreciate the opportunity to check vision & hearing of youngsters in local schools, using our state-of-the-art equipment. The greatest need is in the Catholic Schools, where nursing staff do not have resources to monitor the student’s vision and hearing. In many cases Lions have recommended referrals to vision or hearing medical professionals, and in some cases treatment was “life changing” for the student.

On Oct 22, Lions screened vision of very young children at Emmanuel Lutheran Preschool (Vienna).  Results: 1 child (Age 2), 2 children (Age 3), and 1 (age 4) were referred for follow-up by a professional.

On Oct 28, Fairfax Lions conducted both vision & hearing Screening at Saint Leo the Great Catholic School (in Fairfax).  We checked vision of 66 children, referring 7, and hearing of 51 children, referring another 7.

“Lions Jeopardy”

Posted on October 8, 2025Comments are off

At the FX Lions dinner meeting on October 7th, 1VP Jim led us in a game of Lions Jeopardy. Five categories, with five clues in each. Each clue had something to do with “lions” – either the live animal type, of the service club type. Prizes were halloween candy.

Sports for $100: What is Detroit? (A pretty easy one)
Final jeopardy was hard…the correct response – “What is 1-million members of Lions Clubs International?”

All had a fun time, and lots of folks stocked up on Halloween candy!
