Vision Screening

On Saturday, February 2, a team of Fairfax Lions joined the local Kiwanis Club on the 3rd floor of Fairfax City Firehouse #3.  The event was the Fairfax Chocolate Lover’s Festival.  The Lions screened the vision of 133 persons using the SPOT screening system our Club  owns.

Lion Discusses Screening Results with Clients

The screening process identified 35 persons (a relatively high 26% of total screened) who were referred for a complete eye exam by a professional.  Among this group, several were young children.  A number of families were screened and all were happy to learn about their vision.  One young family was glad to discover that both children needed vision correction, but we could sense their concern about the cost of obtaining professional vision care.  Lions are able to discuss with them advice on how to obtain a no-cost eye exam and eyeglasses, provided by Lions Clubs for qualified persons.

Lions are happy to identity persons with vision concerns so they may be addressed.  WE SERVE!

A club member recently hosted a holiday party and asked guests to bring a donation of shelf-safe food. Fairfax Lions Club checked all the donated food for valid “use by” date, grouped food by category (fruits, vegetables, meats, fish, pasta, rice) and delivered all to the Food for Others food bank on January 18.  In all, this donation represented 156 pounds of food that goes to feed families and individuals in our community.  Fairfax Lions continue to serve the Fairfax community,  since forming in 1951!

Lions Learn About the World’s 1st Nuclear Reactor

Mr. George Tressel was guest speaker at the Fairfax Lions Club Jan 15 dinner meeting.  George discussed the film he wrote, directed and produced:  “The Day Tomorrow Began.”  It tells the story of a proof-of-concept chain reaction, designated Chicago Pile-1, that occurred on Dec 2, 1942 underneath the University of Chicago’s old football stadium with a team of scientists led by Dr Enrico Fermi.  That event was an essential preliminary to development of the atomic bomb that ended World War II.  The film includes a video clip of the atomic bomb exploding over Hiroshima.  That clip was taken by then Director of Los Alamos Lab – Harold Agnew – who was riding in the B-29 bomber that followed the Enola Gay on the bombing run.

You can watch the entire 30 minute film at this web site:  https://nuclearreactions.uchicago.edu/videos/.
